Will a high pitched sound deterrent machine repel wild Los Angeles animals?
According to a lot of experts and the FTC the short answer is no, the FTC after extensive observation and testing has actually said ultrasonic deterrent devices has zero noticeable effect on any California wildlife, it even went so far as to call these devices a gimmick or a scam. But at least you'll know that if you or your neighbors have these devices they won't affect your pets either. Something not many people know about these so-called high-pitched sound deterrent machines is that they are actually an ultrasonic sound emitter, ultrasonic sound cannot travel through solid objects so if the animal you're trying to frighten away is on the other side of the fence or in its nest then the sound will not get to it.
There is another urban myth out there that these devices will work on California bats because bats use the same ultrasonic frequencies that the devices put out therefore the bats navigation and hunting systems are disrupted by the devices. Bats to use ultrasonic frequencies to navigate and to hunt their prey but the frequencies they use him much much higher than the ultrasonic devices put out, but if you install an ultrasonic device near a bat colony all the animals seemed to do is investigate the source of the sound and then ignore it, this also seems to be a trait that most other wild animals adopt, investigate the device and then ignore it.
The major problem with these ultrasonic devices is if they were to ever work on any Los Angeles creature it would have to be a bat because bats are the only creatures in the animal world or the insect world that use ultrasonic sound for their own purposes. Most of the rest of the animals and insects for that matter hear sound in the same frequencies that humans do, or close to it. Most of the devices when tested put out ultrasonic sound for about 6 feet, at 15 feet most of the sound had lost half of its energy and that 30 feet was undetectable, that means even if they did work they would be very short range devices.
There is some new devices hitting the market, these are subsonic devices, the makers of these devices say they work by setting up low-frequency fields when they are plugged into your electrical system, the field is supposed to deter all other Los Angeles animals except your family and your pets. At least one state, Texas, has prohibited one firm from selling any of these devices in the state saying the claims made about them are fraudulent and misleading.
